Jingle Bell 5K Race Review (Just SUAR!)

My first holiday run ever (as in the Christmas holiday) was horrible.
Let me clarify – horrible because I as sick. In the worst way. My stomach was (and is still) a mess, but don’t worry, I’m sure I’ll be perfectly fine just in time for work bright and early tomorrow morning. It wouldn’t happen any other way, would it?
I ran the Jingle Bell Run 5K with my mom and sister.  Here we are before the race (I’m in the middle trying to hold it together – literally):
And here I am finishing (it couldn’t come soon enough, in fact):
Oh well. I finished in 46:37 (something like 14:33 per mile) and while it’s not exactly a PR, at least I did something?  I did start at like a 10:00 minute per mile pace (for about a mile!) and actually thought I would finish really fast due to my gastrointestinal status, but I ran out of steam just before the first mile make and walked (briskly, I might add) for the rest of the race.
I’ve been holed up inside for the remainder of the weekend, unable to keep anything down – not even water really.
Which, brings to mind – I did venture out to put my recently arrived SUAR sticker (get yours today!) on my car (apparently it was life or death if I didn’t) compliments of Beth at Shut Up and Run:
Her blog tag line says, “It really is mind over matter. No excuses. Just do it!” I realized after my race yesterday that it’s true! Beth sent me a nice email this morning that said, “LOVE it. And love that it’s right smack in the middle!! Sorry you’re sick. You could have been in the picture slumped over with stomach cramps, but that would be kind of weird.” She’s funny like that, which is one of the reasons I love her blog.
So, SUAR smack in the middle? YES! I wouldn’t have it any other way, as a matter of fact! It’s what I will say from now on:
  • Had a bad day at work and stressed to the max? SUAR!
  • Not feeling motivated to get out the door on a cold morning and get a workout in? SUAR!
  • One too many miles to knock-out today? SUAR!
  • Passing me when I’m already speeding on I-270 running your mouth and making rude gestures? SUAR!
  • Frustrated that no matter how much you try to get done nothing seems to get done? SUAR!
  • Family or friends on your nerves? SUAR!
  • Holidays making you crazy? SUAR!
  • Sick as a dog, but already registered for that holiday race? SHUT UP AND RUN!

Now, get out there and go for a run!

That sucks about your stomach issues. Those things always happen at the worst times possible. This just means you’ll have to run this race again next year to show them your real potential!

  3. Love SUAR! Perfect comeback for just about anything.

  5. Great run, expecially considering how you were feeling. I love the family picture! That’s so neat that you all are able to do races together.

    Cool SUAR sticker!

  7. That’s how it’s done! It’s not how you start the race, or how you feel or do in the midst of it, but how you have the courage to toe the start line and finish what you started. Nice work.

    What’s SUAR??

  8. Thanks for all the encouragement and support guys, I think my stomach issues are FINALLY getting better! Thomas – SUAR stands for Shut Up and Run brought to you by http://twentysixpointtwoormore.blogspot.com/
