Food of the Week

Let me just say it was nothing really healthy with my birthday last Friday and the Mumford & Sons Stopover Tour this weekend. I need to get back on track in the food department, for sure.

Reflections

This is going to be a long weight loss journey if I can’t even make it past 15 pounds with any degree of consistency. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, food for me is closely tied with emotions (disappointments, celebrations, parties, etc.) and I need to make changes to not entirely eat unhealthy when certain situations arise. It’s okay to celebrate – and I think we should – but sometimes for me moderation goes out the window or I don’t make an effort to eat a vegetable and that is not okay for me. It will never cease to be amazing to me how quickly (granted I have other ‘issues’ if you will going on this week) weight is gained.

Reader’s Recap

I was pretty nervous to put this post out there about why Mumford & Sons means so much to me (because it is pretty personal and I’m not good at writing letters) so if you haven’t had a chance to read it, please do. Also, learn how to dry  hot peppers from your summer garden in my Summer Garden Series, which will be wrapping up with the season soon.

Photo Recap

Um, IT WAS ONLY THE BEST CONCERT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO IN MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE! I already miss it and am dreaming of when I can see Mumford & Sons again. I’m not kidding.

Question of the Week

Do you like Mumford & Sons? Why or why not? What is the best concert you have ever been to? Are you an emotional eater too?

Food of the Week

salad and spaghetti

I made homeade spaghetti and meatballs this week (gluten-free), which was a real treat! I made sure to include a fresh salad with fresh tomatoes and peppers from the garden. I bought a gigantic tub of spinach and baby lettuce leaves so we are having a salad with dinner about every night now. It has also served as lunch for me during the day with some tuna or other vegetables added in.

Activity of the Week

grace at wagfest

While my ankle is healing, it is still tender to the touch, which means I have been easy on it the past three weeks now. We were at Wagfest (a festival for dogs) all day Saturday and while I wasn’t exercising per say, I was moving around and got a lot of fresh air on a short dog walk Saturday and again on Sunday (Monday was National Dog Day in case you missed it). Being outside in nature definitely helped improve my mood, but I am sure a lack of regular physical activity for this much time now has contributed to my gain this week.

Reflections

So my 31st birthday is THIS Friday and THIS is happening this weekend in Troy, Ohio. It’s really all I can think about (other than I wish my ankle would heal so I can exercise again and I think I heal slower on blood thinners for some reason). I cannot wait, I cannot wait, I cannot wait, but I will wait! Stay tuned for my post on Friday about why Mumford and Sons means so much to me. Many have asked and now I will tell!

I’m really excited to have had the opportunity this past week to do some writing outside of this blog. Question of the Week

me collage

I’ve been feeling creative (not necessarily good!) with my camera lately. What do you think of weekly posts that are just photographs and maybe a caption? Yay or nay? Should I do that or continue including photos in the Weekly Weigh-In Post? Do you view photograph-only posts on other blogs or breeze by? Tell me your thoughts in the comments!

Food of the Week

lamb cooking

Lamb! I get really tired of chicken, beef and shrimp and I don’t like pork all that much. I like lamb because it has a slightly gamey taste and really is something different to try. I really only like it grilled (rib steaks or chops) and we usually only eat it in the summer. Lamb is a red meat and although it can be fatty, the unsaturated (or healthy) fats make up over half the fat in lamb – so, it’s fat your body needs. Lamb also has a high nutritional value and is an especially good source of zinc and iron, making it a high quality protein. Zinc is essential for growth, tissue repair, and a healthy immune system iron for the formation of red blood cells. Lamb is rich in B vitamins, essential for the body’s metabolic reactions. Lamb is also nature’s best source for an amino acid called carnitine, which is needed to generate energy from fatty acids. If you haven’t tried it and enjoy red meat – do! You can find it in your local grocery store with the meats.

Activity of the Week

None. I’m still recovering ankle-wise from falling off a cliff two weekends ago. My ankle is bruised and slightly swollen still, especially at the end of the day. I’m monitoring it closely for signs of a new blood clot, for obvious reasons. This has thrown a huge wrench in my training plans for the upcoming quarter marathon (Sunday).

Reflections

I won’t be able to run the Emerald City Quarter Marathon this weekend. That makes me incredibly sad. The 5K took almost everything I had out of me and I still have Pretty Muddy coming up in September. I am trying to reconcile running a successful 5K, falling off a cliff and not running the Quarter in my mind. I revert back to something I used to tell others I coached…there will always be another race.

Food of the Week

Tacos with white border

I made Easy Shredded Crock Pot Chipotle Chicken Tacos this week and they were so good! I figured out they are (about) 7 WW points per taco (served on a small corn tortilla). Recipe coming to the blog on Friday! I also went to the State Fair and tried a deep-fried Buckeye (hey, I do live in Ohio after all) and it was not worth whatever points I am sure it was! Ew.

Activity of the Week

Race Medal Edited.jpg

I ran the Commit to Be Fit 5K on Sunday in 45 minutes 18 seconds (14:35 pace per mile). This was my first official race since the blood clot in my lung stopped me from running just over a year ago. It took me 363 days to run again and 13 months to race again. It was my second first 5K. Read my full race recap.

Reflections

How is it so easy to gain 4 pounds, but I lose them one by one?! I guess this is a mini-example of how weight-loss goes throughout our entire lives. It is easy to gain weight (for whatever reason – mine is major medical issues which caused me to be sedentary for an extended period of time combined with poor food choices since then and a slow return to exercise). But, I remember when I gained weight the first time right out of college and I literally felt like one day I woke up and said, “How did I gain all of this weight?!” I still didn’t do anything about it immediately and when I did decide to get healthy, it was a slow process and eventual weight loss – far from overnight! Thank you all for your encouragement since last week! I am on a journey – not a race – and I Will. Get. There.

Food of the Week

chicken stew

My food choices for the past couple of weeks have not been that great. I wasn’t on top of keeping track of my points, and I think this gain is residual from the past week or so. This is one healthy dish I made – some sort of chicken and tomato stew that I found in my Mom’s old recipes. It also had a few potatoes and green peppers in it.

Activity of the Week

Nothing. I haven’t felt good all week (or more and with the extreme heat and humidity last week, I did not get a workout in.

Weigh-In Wednesday Reflections

Big. Gain. I’m really disappointed in myself right now. Normally, I stay pretty positive, but I honestly just want to give up on weight loss and getting back into shape. The thought of going through another year (or more) of these ups and downs (because it happens. every. time.) is pretty overwhelming to me at the moment. I’m trying to turn my thoughts around, but I’m losing the resolve to do so.
