Food of the Week

lamb cooking

Lamb! I get really tired of chicken, beef and shrimp and I don’t like pork all that much. I like lamb because it has a slightly gamey taste and really is something different to try. I really only like it grilled (rib steaks or chops) and we usually only eat it in the summer. Lamb is a red meat and although it can be fatty, the unsaturated (or healthy) fats make up over half the fat in lamb – so, it’s fat your body needs. Lamb also has a high nutritional value and is an especially good source of zinc and iron, making it a high quality protein. Zinc is essential for growth, tissue repair, and a healthy immune system iron for the formation of red blood cells. Lamb is rich in B vitamins, essential for the body’s metabolic reactions. Lamb is also nature’s best source for an amino acid called carnitine, which is needed to generate energy from fatty acids. If you haven’t tried it and enjoy red meat – do! You can find it in your local grocery store with the meats.

Activity of the Week

None. I’m still recovering ankle-wise from falling off a cliff two weekends ago. My ankle is bruised and slightly swollen still, especially at the end of the day. I’m monitoring it closely for signs of a new blood clot, for obvious reasons. This has thrown a huge wrench in my training plans for the upcoming quarter marathon (Sunday).

Run a Quarter Marathon or 10K (Emerald City; Dublin, Ohio; August 25, 2013)
Run a Mud/Obstacle Race (Pretty Muddy Women’s Mud Run 5K; Columbus, Ohio September 14, 2013)

Reflections

I won’t be able to run the Emerald City Quarter Marathon this weekend. That makes me incredibly sad. The 5K took almost everything I had out of me and I still have Pretty Muddy coming up in September. I am trying to reconcile running a successful 5K, falling off a cliff and not running the Quarter in my mind. I revert back to something I used to tell others I coached…there will always be another race.

  1. Great week, Sara! I love lamb, too. But don’t care for the smell of it cooking in the house (unless you are cooking it in tomato sauce, which hides the smell) so BBQ is the way to go.. outside! I particularly like it on kebabs. Greek style lamb souvlaki! Yummers.

I agree, Elle, it is best cooked outside on the grill! I had everything prepped when we realized we were out of gas for it so I just threw it on the stove “grill.” It was still good, but I love cooking it outside over a flame! Kebabs sound good – I have made everything else kebabs, but not lamb so thanks for the idea. I just don’t like it ground up or as a roast. Only grilled! I guess that is strange….. Thanks for stopping by, my friend!

  2. Nice loss this week! I love reading your weigh-in posts to see how you’re doing. 🙂

  3. CONGRATS!!!!! Yes, always another race & better to be healthy & be able to race than do something that takes you out of racing period. 🙂
